These start from as little as $15 per month with unlimited storage, can be upgraded all the way to fully managed dedicated servers (or clusters!) and, as a welcome present, WP.MU clients receive a free month 
Here’s a recommendation – we use them extensively ourselves – just check the IP range of any Edublogs Campus site… they offer perfect uptime, support and great cPanel tools like Fantastico (which auto installs dozens of open source apps).
BuddyPress and bbPress
If you choose we’ll also install BuddyPress and bbPress alongside WPMU, as part of which we’ll integrate cookies, shared user bases and plugins (such as custom shared avatars).
So, you can either have brilliant integrated forums, or an out of the box social network… for about a tenth of the price you might pay a less experienced developer to do it!
